In cooperation with the School for Field Studies, Dickinson students may participate in the following semester programs:
SFS's Center for Sustainable Development Studies is exploring means of promoting sustainable land use and effective land protection in response to pressure from population growth and a degraded natural resource base. With the results of this research, SFS will help to develop protocols and training for farmers to help them obtain organic certification, select and monitor indicators of biodiversity, as well as provide information about improving national park operations and relationships between parks and local people.

SFS's Center for Marine Resource Studies is exploring ways to improve the sustainability of exploited marine resources and the protection of the near pristine coral reef ecosystem at South Caicos. The Center's research monitors the stocks of lobster and conch, the condition of coral reefs and the populations of reef fish. The goal of the program is to provide the local community and tourism developers with advice that will help sustain the traditional fishing economy as well as minimize the environmental impacts of growing tourism on the terrestrial and marine environments.

SFS's Center for Wildlife Management Studies is exploring ways to improve wildlife and rangeland management within national parks, and promote co-habitation between humans and migrating wildlife. The Center's research investigates range and wildlife ecology, as well as human-wildlife conflict and competition around national parks. The goal of the program is to provide advice that will help maintain ecological balances in and around protected areas and sustainable co-habitation between human settlers and wildlife in regions surrounding the protected areas.

SFS's Center for Rainforest Studies is exploring the biodiversity benefits of restoration, the cost efficiency and ecological effectiveness of rainforest restoration site management practices and restoration planning in a riparian zone. With the results of this research and the Center's replanting projects, SFS will help to connect and create corridors between existing rainforest fragments, protect local drinking water sources and share best site management practices with rainforest restoration researchers worldwide.
