Dickinson’s environmental studies department, one of the oldest and best established in the country, is remarkable for its range of activities. Sample opportunities include working with communities on environmental-justice issues, participating in field and laboratory research on forest responses to environmental stresses and working at the
Dickinson College Farm. Students choose either a B.S. in environmental science or a B.A. in environmental studies. In addition to fulfilling a set of core requirements, each student constructs a customized concentration based on a cluster of courses that fits his or her interests. The department’s resources include a
geographic-information systems (GIS) laboratory, state-of-the-art instruments for chemical analysis and access to the
Reineman Sanctuary, a forested wildlife preserve near campus, the
Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM), the Center for Sustainable Living (Treehouse) and the
Center for Sustainability Education (CSE).
The Environmental Studies Department recognizes that solutions to the human predicament require an interdisciplinary effort. The goals of the program include providing a sound academic background and an opportunity for students to use their education through research and community engagement.
