Internship Site: IMG - New York, NY
I found my internship through a family friend who is a client of the company. I had been talking to him about my interests and what field I wanted to go into after graduating. I said I was interested in the business side of fashion or event planning. He knew of the perfect company, IMG, where I could be involved with both fashion and event planning. I applied for the internship by filling out an application and then had a phone interview. I was placed in the fashion department where I worked with the sales and sponsorship department.
I worked on several different projects that changed on a day-to-day basis. IMG puts together the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week throughout various destinations around the world. New York is the largest fashion week that occurs in both September and February. I helped begin organizing this the event in the fall and also helped with the preparation of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim, which took place in Miami in July.
I found starting the internship in June challenging because it was difficult to adapt to the fast paced work environment due to the fact that everyone only had a few weeks to finalize the details for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim. The team was leaving for Miami in just a few weeks and did not have as much time as they would have liked to be able to explain everything to us. I overcame this challenge by carefully listening to direction and looking at pictures from the previous events. It put everything we were asked to do in perspective and so that everything made sense. I learned that in a job you are going to need to jump in and adapt to a work environment not always with as much explanation or direction I would like. It forced me to challenge myself and come up with ways of teaching computer programs or ways the company did business on my own.
IMG takes their internship program extremely seriously and wants all of their interns to have a memorable and beneficial experience. My supervisor was particularly helpful in answering any questions I had about IMG as a company or the industry in general. She said she would be more than happy to help out in the future.
The internship has helped me with my future career goals because it has helped me gain experience and know what I like and don’t like in the industry. I had a fantastic experience and know that I would love to work for a company similar to IMG and that indeed I can do both fashion and event planning at the same time.
Tips from Lauren:
NETWORK, NETWORK AND NETWORK. Getting jobs and internships these days are all about the connection you make with the people you meet. They can be helpful in the future even if it is by simply introducing you to someone else in the field you are looking in.
