Internship Site: Brooklyn Nets - Brooklyn, NY
The Internship:
My father happened to know someone who worked in sports management, specifically for CBS. He had friends in several businesses, multiple of which I applied to. I was most intrigued by the Brooklyn Nets and after an interview they offered me an internship in their marketing department.
My responsibilities included planning and setting up events, creating databases, organizing files, making check requests, going to events and ensuring all is prepared, and cleaning after those events.
The Challenges:
The most challenging aspect of the internship was that I had never worked in marketing/sports managements before. My previous two internships with Merrill Lynch and UniCredit were in the finance field, both private and corporate, so this was a completely different area of work. Luckily, I worked with people who helped teach me a lot about the business and I also was not shy to ask questions and immerse myself in the job. I learned that as long as one is truly passionate about a certain subject and works hard, others will notice and it becomes easier to succeed.
The Preparation:
Several of my previous classes at Dickinson were beneficial to this job. These classes were Fundamentals of Business (particularly how to start up a new business since we are moving the business from NJ to Brooklyn and effectively starting over), Ethics, and Transnational America (because Brooklyn has many different cultures so understanding these cultures helped with marketing).
The Future:
While I have enjoyed the financial world, I have always been interested in sports management. This internship truly opened my eyes to the sports management industry and while I will always like finance and know I could succeed in the financial world, I would love to work in sports management.
Tips from Andre:
Use all methods of networking, whether through the school, past internships/jobs, or even family and friends. Meeting people and staying in contact is one of the most important tools in getting a job. Show that you are interested. Social media tools like Facebook and Linked In can also help.
