Playwright Edward Albee
Receives Stellfox Award
November 18-19, 2006

Three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Edward Albee visited Dickinson College on Nov. 18 and 19 as part of The Harold and Ethel L. Stellfox Visiting Scholars and Writers Program. While on campus Albee discussed The State of Theatre and the Arts in America, held an open class for Dickinson students to discuss his recent play, The Goat and participated in An Evening with Edward Albee, during which he discussed the creative process and his body of work.

Called “the greatest living playwright” by The New Yorker magazine, Albee’s first play in 1959 was The Zoo Story, about a drifter who acts out his own murder. He is perhaps best known for his three-act drama, Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, hailed for its honest dialogue and jarring interpretation of modern relationships. His plays frequently explore the most intimate aspects of our lives and society – from race relations (The Death of Bessie Smith) and family life (A Delicate Balance) to mortality (The Lady from Dubuque) and the blurred line between reality and illusion (Seascape). His other plays include The Sandbox, The American Dream, The Play About the Baby, Three Tall Women and The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?

The Harold and Ethel L. Stellfox Visiting Scholars and Writers Program was established by alumna Jean Stellfox '60, in honor of her parents.

Jean Louise Stellfox '60 was so inspired by a visit by poet Robert Frost (center) in 1959 that she left more than $1 million to Dickinson College. The gift will make it possible each year for a major author to spend a few days on campus. Learn more about Jean Louise Stellfox.
