Advanced Credit

Below are the guidelines that Dickinson College uses to assign placement and/or credit for Advanced Placement tests. If you have not already done so, contact the College Board at 1-877-274-6474 to have your official scores sent to Dickinson.

The Placement column indicates what course level(s) you are eligible to take according to the score you received on the placement test. "None" means you have to start at the 100 level.

The Credit column designates the course(s) for which you will receive college credit according to your placement test score. This credit may also count toward specific degree requirements, unless noted otherwise.

For any "See Department" comments, you should contact the individual department to determine your placement or credit.

* This course counts toward the Lab Sciences (Division III) requirement.
NOTE: This change in credit awarded for Biology AP scores will take affect beginning with students entering in Fall 2018.

* Students must take the Dickinson Math Placement exam to determine whether they should take MATH 151 or 170.
** Credit for MATH 170 given upon successful completion of 171.
*** MATH 170 fulfills the QR requirement.

* Students must take the Dickinson Math Placement exam to determine whether they should take MATH 151 or 170.
** Credit for MATH 170 given upon successful completion of 171.
*** MATH 211 is offered every fall.
**** MATH 170 or 270 fulfills the QR requirement.

DUE TO THE ABSENCE OF AB SUBGRADE SCORES IN SPRING 2020, THE FOLLOWING PLACEMENT/CREDIT REPLACES THE INFORMATION IN THE CALCULUS BC CHART FOR SPRING 2020 ONLY:
Score 1: No credit, must take math placement exam for placement into 151 or 170
Score 2: No credit, must take math placement exam for placement into 151 or 170
Score 3: Student may self-place into 170 or 171.  AP Credit will be awarded for 170 if student elects and passes 171.
Score 4: Placement into 171 or 211, Credit for 170, 270
Score 5: Placement into 171 or 211, Credit for 170, 270

* Students planning to continue with Chemistry must take the Chemistry Placement Exam.Students who place into CHEM 141 will have the GNCR 000 changed to CHEM 000 upon successful completion of 141.
** This course counts toward the Lab Sciences requirement.

* This credit does not fulfill the Laboratory Science requirement.

* Students scoring a 3, 4 or 5 on the Computer Science Principles exam should refer to the Computer Science Advising Guide [link: https://www.dickinson.edu/homepage/319/computer_science_advising] for advice on choosing COMP 130 or COMP 132.
** This credit does not fulfill the Laboratory Science requirement.

* Although students receive credit for WRPG 211, this credit does NOT fulfill the Writing Intensive or Writing in the Discipline requirement.
NOTE: Beginning with students entering in Fall 2019, the WRPG 211 course cannot count toward the English major.

* Although students receive credit for ENGL 101, this credit does NOT fulfill the Writing Intensive or Writing in the Discipline requirement.  The AP course can count toward the English major.

* Students with an AP 1 or 2 who plan to continue the study of French MUST take the Dickinson College placement exam.
** Students with an AP 4 or 5 score receive one course credit and will have completed the language graduation requirement. 

* Although students receive credit for HIST 117, this credit does NOT fulfill the US Diversity requirement, nor will this course fulfill any requirement for the history major.
 

* This course will not fulfill any requirement for the history major.

* This course fulfills the Global Diversity requirement, however it will not fulfill any requirement for the history major.

 *Students with an AP 1 or 2 who plan to continue the study of ITALIAN MUST take the Dickinson College placement exam.
**Students with an AP 4 or 5 score receive one course credits and will have completed the language graduation requirement.

* Students who plan to continue the study of Japanese MUST take the Dickinson College placement exam.

*This table only applies if students earn 4 or 5 in both Mechanics and E & M.
 

* Students who plan to continue the study of Spanish MUST take the Dickinson College placement exam.
** Students who earned 4 or 5 on AP, and who plan to continue the study of Spanish MUST take the Dickinson College placement exam to determine appropriate course placement.
