Mina Grothey ’67Mina
Grothey ’67 has enjoyed a long career in library science, but her interest in
research first blossomed at Dickinson. “I thank Dickinson for the foundation it
gave me,” she says. “The well-rounded education I got gave me a love for
learning that has stayed with me all my life.”
That
love for learning spurred Grothey to pursue a master’s degree in library
science at the University of Texas after graduation. From there, she launched a
more than three decade career working on technical services, third-world
collections, and Latin American studies in the libraries of Duke University, Yale
University and the University of New Mexico. Even after retiring in 2008,
Grothey’s education continues. She now serves as a docent at the New Mexico
Museum of Natural History and Science, where she has developed an interest in
geology, astronomy and paleontology.
When
Grothey thought recently about the best way to repay the college for the
foundation and springboard it provided, a charitable gift annuity made good
sense. By giving to the college this way, she realized, she could make an
impact now and get a 5 percent return on her investment. “You’re lucky if you
can get 1 percent from a bank,” she says with a chuckle. “I had long ago
decided that I would set aside money for Dickinson in my will, and I got to
thinking, well, why wait?”
