Internships for Environmental Studies and Science Majors

ES Internship Agreement Form (PDF)

The BA Degree in Environmental Studies requires majors to complete an internship, independent study, or independent research for at least one academic credit. Both Environmental Studies (BA) and Environmental Science (BS) majors can also have a credit-bearing internship apply toward their thematic concentration upon approval by their advisor. When used to meet the internship/study/research requirement of the BA degree, the internship cannot also be applied to the thematic focus.

Academic credit for the internship is arranged through the department with the Internship Coordinator in the Career Center who is available to help students find appropriate sites and site supervisors. Department internships require both an on- site and an academic supervisor. Students should have made all arrangements in time for the course request period of the semester during which they will do the internship. Credit-bearing internships conducted during the summer break require formal registration for Summer School through the Registrar.

Academic credit internships require a minimum of 120 hours of work (typically 8-10 hours per week over the semester), as well as a written component and oral presentation. The details of such are arranged with the academic supervisor for the internship and may include work submitted for the site supervisor. An internship agreement is required to be filled out by the student in consultation with the site and academic supervisors. After filling out the internship contract, the student must also register on Banner. Hard copies of the internship agreement are available from Mary Orr in the ES Department Office.

ES students may also do an internship without academic credit but with transcript notation. This is arranged through the Internship Office. Details may be found at Dickinson's Career Center internship web site. Non-credit internships do not fulfill the internship/independent study/independent research requirement for the BA degree.
