Nanoparticles with Interesting Optical Properties and a Purpose
Presented by Professor Sarah K. St. Angelo

At the nanoscale, the rules of macroscale objects no longer apply. Molecular interactions are sometimes helpful but not always appropriate. What we are left with is a new set of properties to be measured and manipulated. In this talk, the properties of nanoscale materials and nano phenomena will be discussed, with often surprising and sometimes beautiful results.  A “green” synthetic approach to nanoparticles will be presented, including biosynthesis of nanoplatelets and fluorescent nanoparticles. Additionally, a new project will be introduced that aims to exploit a synergistic effect between nanoparticles and chemotherapeutic agents in the treatment of cancer.
