Professor Jonathan Page

will present

We See What We Think We See

Our general world knowledge, previous experiences, contextual information, and even our fears, thoughts, and imagination influence our visual perception in a dynamic manner. In other words, top-down influences play a determining role in what we actually “see” in the environment.  What remains to be determined is the amount of influence these processes exert over vision and the extent to which they actually influence our day-to-day perceptions. Evidence from vision science as well as experimental evidence from my lab will be presented to describe this process. Real-life examples of misperceptions will also be presented as examples and discussed.
