Over the last decade and a half the flamboyant, unscrupulous Silvio Berlusconi has endowed the post-Fascist Republic of Italy with a clear, if unsavory face. Can't Italians do better? The brilliant, pragmatic and quietly charismatic Alcide de Gasperi led Italy through the difficult years of post-war reconstruction, adoption of a republican government, and entry into the Atlantic Alliance. His tenure of service as prime minster stands second only to Berlusconi's.
