James Oakes, Distinguished Professor at the City University of New York Graduate Center, will present a talk on "The Emancipation Proclamation: Myths and Realities" on Wednesday, October 23, at 7:00 pm in the Stern Center, Great Room. Dr. Oakes has been teaching and writing about slavery, antislavery,and the origins of the Civil War for almost thirty years. His most recent book, Freedom National: The Destruction of Slavery in the United States, 1861-1865 was the winner of the Lincoln Prize. This talk is being co-sponsored by the House Divided Project and the Clarke Forum.
It was recently announced that Visiting Assistant Professor Derek Mancini-Lander was awarded the 2013 Malcolm H. Kerr Dissertation Award from the Middle East Studies Association for his dissertation, Memory on the Boundaries of Empire: Narrating Place in the Early Modern Local Historiography of Yazd.
