The 27th Annual Science Research Symposium will be held on Monday, April 23, 2012 in the Rector Science Complex Atrium from 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm.  This event will feature student poster presentations. We strongly encourage all students who would like to present their research to put together a poster. Light refreshments will be served.

 
Special Note Regarding Poster Sizes:
If you are printing a new poster for this day, please keep the maximum poster width to 44” so it will fit on the large poster boards.  We will provide large foam wall boards, t-stands, easels, and tables in order to accommodate a variety of posters. If your poster is extra wide and you need two foam boards or would prefer t-stands, you need access to an electrical outlet, or any other special requests, please include this information when you submit your abstract.  If you do not include special requests with your abstract we cannot guarantee that your needs will be met.

 Abstracts will be listed in the printed brochure in the order they are received. The location of your poster will also be based upon the order the abstract was received.  

 Please provide Jann Ernst (ernstj@dickinson.edu) with the following information no later than Monday, April 16th, if you would like to present a poster:

    1.  name of student presenting
    2.  full title of presentation
    3.  name of faculty mentor (if any)
    4.  short abstract of the research (250 words or less)

 Hosted by the Saint Joseph's University Chapter of Sigma Xi

 "A Celebration of Student Research"

The 23rd Annual Sigma Xi Student Research Symposium will be held on Friday, April 13, 2012, at Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia. Undergraduate and graduate students working in the areas of Mathematics, Computer Science, Engineering, the Natural, and the Social Sciences are invited and encouraged to present the results of their work in the poster sessions.  We expect, as in previous years, over 100 students from the region’s colleges and universities to attend.

 The Symposium will commence at 5:00 PM on the Saint Joseph's University Campus in Philadelphia, PA.  It will open with the keynote address in the Wolfington Teletorium in Mandeville Hall. The poster sessions will start at 6:45 in the Campion Student Center.

 This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Gordon Burghardt from the Departments of Psychology and Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Tennessee.  His talk is entitled "The Origins and Biology of Play."  This talk is free and open to the public.  Dr. Burghardt will also be this year’s recipient of the Christopher Clavius, S.J. award.  This award recognizes the work of inspirational scientists, researchers and policy makers.  Clavius, a Jesuit mathematician and astronomer is best known as an architect of the modern Gregorian calendar and as an inspiration to such thinkers as Kepler, Descartes and Leibniz.  Dr. Burghardt is particularly deserving of this award.  He has authored over 160 journal articles, and has edited or authored 6 books on various aspects of animal behavior and cognition. He has received awards and grants from numerous organizations and agencies, including the National Institute of Mental Health and the National Science Foundation, and has served as President of the American Psychological Association’s Division 6 (Behavioral Neuroscience and Comparative Psychology), as well as the Animal Behavior Society.

 The registration fee for the symposium is $25 for students and $40 for faculty members.
