Noorjahan Akbar is Grand-Prize Winner in Glamour Magazine Competition

The Department warmly congratulates sociology major Noorjahan Akbar '14 on winning the grand prize in Glamour Magazine's Top 10 College Women Contest.  A Kabul native, Noorjahan is the co-founder of Young Women for Change, a non-profit organization that works to improve the lives of Afghan women through social and political participation, political empowerment, advocacy and increased access to education.

Sociology senior awarded Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for 2013

Giovania Tiarachristie was awarded one of 30 Paul and Daisy Soros Fellows for 2013. The program "honors and supports the graduate education of 30 New Americans--permanent residents--each year. The fellow receives tuition and living expenses over two academic years to support their field of study at any university in the United States. Fellows are selected on the basis of merit--emphasizing creativity, originality, initiative and sustained accomplishment."

Caitlin Ruggeri '12 will be attending New York University to pursue a Master's of Public Health in Community and International Health in the fall of 2012.  Congratulations, Caitlin!

Colin Macfarlane '12 has received a grant to fund his MA/Ph.D. Sociology program at the University of Delaware beginning in the fall 2012. Congratulations, Colin!

Congratulations to Mauricio (Reece) Torres! He will be a Robert E. McNair Fellow in the Sociology Department at Syracuse this fall.
