“Exploring the hidden landscapes of Pennsylvania using LiDAR data”

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is an optical remote sensing technology used for measuring distances that is quickly changing how scientists view and map the surface of the earth.  Within the field of GIS (geographic information systems), LiDAR is gaining popularity for use in many applications such as terrain modeling, geomorphology, hydrology, landscape ecology, and urban planning, just to name a few.  Starting in 2006, Pennsylvania undertook a program to collect and process high resolution LiDAR elevation data for the entire state, becoming one of the first states in the nation to do so.  This talk will explore just some of the few ways that this technology is transforming our view and understanding of the Pennsylvania landscape.
