Course Description:
Advanced practice in oral and written Portuguese. In-class work focuses primarily on oral practice through presentations and class-wide discussions of these presentations, of current events, readings and films, as well as small group practice emphasizing everyday situations. Out-of-class work focuses on writing and revision of compositions with emphasis on both grammar and style. Prerequisite: 116 or the equivalent.

Course Description:
Cross-listed with LALC 300-02. This course examines key literary texts of Brazilian literature since the 19th century, while discussing issues of gender, class, and race. Students will read novels, dramas, poems, and short stories, as well as well-known pieces of theory and literary criticism in order to rethink the literary production of this country.

This course will focus on developing students' writing skills through reading, discussion, and analysis of films and literary texts by Cuban writers both at home and abroad. Emphasis will be placed on analyzing poetry and prose through various approaches, as well asunderstanding the social, political, and cultural stakes surrounding this part of the Caribbean diaspora; the 1959 Cuban Revolution will be a main theme.

Sustain in Contxt of Hisp Cult

Course Description:
Permission of Instructor Required. This section of Spanish 231 will examine the concept of sustainability in the context of Hispanic cultures and will examine its social, economic, and environmental components. The class will begin with a two-week trip to Cuba to study food security and sustainable urban agriculture in La Havana. Upon return to campus students will develop projects related to their experience in Cuba and also continue with other sustainability case studies. The course will include readings by noted Hispanic authors such as Homero Aridjis, Pablo Neruda, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Miguel Delibes, among others. Readings will develop an understanding of how our relation to the environment is expressed in Spanish and discussion of readings will help students develop critical thinking skills. By the end of the course, students should have a basic understanding of the principal historical and cultural contexts that orient considerations of sustainability in the Hispanic world. They will also have developed an ability to express ideas and formulate responses to sustainability issues with appropriate vocabulary, both orally and in writing.

Writing Chile in the 19th C

Course Description:
Cross-listed with LALC 300-01. This course studies how Chile was conceptualized and portrayed following independence through the analysis of patriotic hymns, emblems, art, monuments, and literature. It discusses how symbols and heroes, like Diego Portales, Andrs Bello and Arturo Prat, were devised and written, and it considers how these constructed images related to nationalistic fervor, war sentiment, and feelings of a shared Americanism. The renowned historiography debates between Bello, and Lastarria and Chacn are analyzed, as well as the literature produced from the Generation of 1842. Works by Alberto Blest Gana, deemed Chiles most important novelist of the 19th century, will also be studied.
