The chemistry department employs a novel, hands-on approach that, while blurring the boundaries between the sub-disciplines of chemistry, encourages students to explore lessons in the laboratory from the first year onward. As a result it is not uncommon for majors to become involved in student/faculty research as early as the sophomore year. Each year, the Priestley Celebration brings to campus a distinguished scientist honored for discoveries that contribute to the welfare of humankind.
It would be impossible to exaggerate the influence of chemistry on the development of our modern, technology-driven society. Advances made in the chemical sciences have had a profound impact on our lives. Our goal is to allow students the opportunity to participate in furthering these advances by providing them with a firm foundation in chemistry. We aim to fulfill this mission through the use of innovative instructional methodologies, exposure to relevant laboratory techniques, field experiences, and the hands-on use of modern instrumentation.
