Professors Asunción Arnedo and Mark Aldrich from the Department of Spanish & Portuguese, in conjunction with the Center for Global Education, led a group of thirteen students on a trip to Cuba over winter break as part of Professor Arnedo’s Spanish 231 class, the Globally Integrated Course “Sustainability in Hispanic Contexts,” which continues during the current semester. The group was hosted by the Martin Luther King Center in Havana. The trip lasted twelve days, during which time the group learned about sustainable agriculture and Cuba’s national health system. The class, through lectures, readings, and endless personal conversations with Cubans, considered questions of social justice, economic development, and freedom of expression, among many other topics. At the end of the semester, students will offer multimedia presentations to the Dickinson community in an event hosted by the Center for Global Engagement and Studies. Students
enrolled in Professor Asunción Arnedo’s Spanish 239/Spanish for the Health Professions attended the Latino Health Fair
on Sunday, September 30 on the grounds of Gettysburg College. The health fair
was paired this year with Fiesta 2012, the fair
celebrated the migrant workers in Adams County, and also provided an
opportunity to workers with free health services.
Services included flu shots and blood pressure screenings from Wellspan,
guidance on raising children with disabilities, and general health information
from the American Cancer Society.

Spanish for the
Health Professions is a yearly course that was developed by Dickinson
College Professor Wendell Smith, Assistant Professor of Spanish. The
course provides students opportunities to develop and utilize their Spanish
language skills in health care settings. Coursework
educates students in appropriate vocabulary for medical settings, an
understanding of the importance of language and culture to medicine, and the
problems that arise from a cultural divide in healthcare delivery. The
class discusses language, public policy, anthropology, and sociology as such
disciplines are related to cross-cultural healthcare.
Students are required to serve once a week in a setting where healthcare
is being delivered to Spanish-speakers. Many students accompany nurse
practitioners from Keystone Migrant Health to labor camps for migrant fruit
workers to register clients for health service at Keystone’s clinic in
Gettysburg. Students assist with filling out forms and paperwork for
Spanish-speaking clients. Bilingual students may serve at the Wellspan
Health Connect van in Biglerville as receptionists and medical interpreters and
help with paperwork and medical interpreting during patient appointments.

Heather Livingston, a Spanish language student, incorporated
her language skills into a fun and interesting bi-lingual, guided tour of the

Martínez-Vidal's distinguished career at Dickinson spanned four decades.
Enrique was instrumental in helping guide our department's growth and

Primera Posada Navideña

On Thursday, December 8th, the Spanish Club hosted a celebration of the traditional Latin-American and Spanish holiday Las Posada. The event included tortilla española, ponche, and other traditional Spanish and Mexican Christmas foods in addition to Spanish Christmas villancicos (or carols) and piñatas.

Posadas are parties that begin on December 16 and culminate on Christmas Eve, the 24th. Posada means "inn" in English and the parties celebrate Mary and Joseph's search for shelter to have their baby. The celebrations last nine days, each day representing a month of Mary's pregnancy. Groups of people go around to different houses and sing a special villancico, or carol, asking for posada until they reach the house where the celebration will be held. At these parties, people enjoy time with their families, drink hot punch, and pass out small bags of goodies that contain things like peanuts, nuts, cookies, oranges, and other traditional candy. During this time there are also special star piñatas with seven point representing the seven sins. The base of the piñata is a clay pot and the breaking of these piñatas signifies the destruction of the seven sins.

Friday, November 4, Dickinson students gathered on Britton Plaza with Piñatas, hot chocolate, sweets, and Mexican music to celebrate El Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead). El Dia de los Muertos is a traditional Mexican holiday honoring both
death and the cycle of life. During late October into early November,
neighbors gather in local cemeteries to share food, music, and fun with
their extended community, both living and departed. The celebration
acknowledges that we still have a relationship with our ancestors and
loved ones that have passed away.

recently for the Spanish Club’s annual Paella Dinner. Associate Professor of
Spanish & Portuguese Mark Aldrich prepared the popular Spanish dish on-site
using an oversized paellera (paella
pan). Paella is made in every region of Spain, using just about any kind of
ingredient that goes well with rice. Every region has its own version of
paella. It may contain chicken,
pork, shellfish, fish, eel, squid, beans, peas, artichokes or peppers. Saffron,
the spice that also turns the rice a wonderful golden color is an essential
part of the dish.

The audience was entertained by a lively performance from
the regional flamenco group, Flamenco
Tablao,

The event was funded by the
Spanish Club and the Student Senate, and celebrated Spanish culture through food,
dance and music.

For the last decade, Mexico, and especially its border regions, has suffered
skyrocketing murder rates and a breakdown in public safety driven by a surge in
drug-fueled organized crime. The "Merida Initiative," first
crafted in 2008, was an attempt by the United States to help its neighbor, but
the violence today continues unabated. Johnson, the senior U.S.
government official responsible for this “initiative” from its inception until
January 2011, will address how it was crafted, what it has delivered, and the
prospects for bringing down Mexico's high rates of murder and violence.
