Lupus and Snurps: Bench to Bedside and Back Again Thursday, April 18, 2013
Anita Tuvin Schlechter Auditorium, 7:00 p.m. This talk will trace the origins of our understanding of how small cellular particles contribute to the critical process of splicing and relate this knowledge to today’s quest for treatment of splicing diseases, such as Lupus. The Joseph Priestley Award recipient is chosen by a different science department each year. This year the recipient was selected by the Department of Biology. The event is sponsored by The Clarke Forum for Contemporary Issues and Student Senate and co-sponsored by and the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Psychology, Physics & Astronomy and Environmental Studies. Biography (provided by the speaker) Joan Steitz is a Sterling Professor of Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry; and Investigator at Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Yale University. Steitz earned her B.S. in chemistry from Antioch College in 1963. Significant findings from her work emerged as early as 1967, when her Harvard PhD thesis with Jim Watson examined the test-tube assembly of a ribonucleic acid (RNA) bacteriophage (antibacterial virus) known as R17. Steitz spent the next three years in postdoctoral studies at the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, England, where she used early methods for determining the biochemical sequence of RNA to study how ribosomes know where to initiate protein synthesis on bacterial mRNAs. In 1970, she was appointed assistant professor of molecular biophysics and biochemistry at Yale, becoming full professor in 1978. At Yale, she established a laboratory dedicated to the study of RNA structure and function. In 1979, Steitz and her colleagues described a group of cellular particles called small nuclear ribonucleoproteins (snRNPs), a breakthrough in understanding how RNA is spliced. Subsequently, her laboratory has defined the structures and functions of other noncoding RNPs, such as those that guide the modification of ribosomal RNAs and several produced by transforming herpesviruses. Today, her studies of noncoding RNAs include microRNAs. Steitz is an investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Medicine. Her many honors include the U.S. Steel Foundation Award in Molecular Biology (1982), the National Medal of Science (1986), the Lewis S. Rosenstiel Award (2002), the FASEB Excellence in Science Award (2003), the RNA Society Lifetime Achievement Award (2004), E.B. Wilson Medal (2005), Gairdner Foundation International Award (2006), and Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research (2008), [shared with Elizabeth Blackburn], Harden Jubilee Medal, British Biochemical Society (2009), The Robert J. and Claire Pasarow Foundation 23rd Annual Medical Research Award for Extraordinary Achievement in Cancer Research (2011), The Pearl Meister Greengard Prize (2012). She is the recipient of 15 honorary degrees. Joseph Priestley Lecture
The Priestley Award is presented by Dickinson College in memory of Joseph Priestley, discoverer of oxygen, to a distinguished scientist whose work has contributed to the welfare of humanity. The Priestley Award, first presented in 1952, recognizes outstanding achievement and contribution to our understanding of science and the world.

Alzheimer’s disease is the
sixth-leading cause of death in this country. It is a progressive disorder,
whose hallmark symptoms are impaired memory and cognition. The fear of
acquiring Alzheimer’s has led to the use of herbal or dietary supplements
purported to enhance memory. The effectiveness of supplements is often based on
testimonial evidence. We research these supplements to determine if they are
actually effective. We produce amnesia in day-old chicks by administering a
drug called scopolamine. Previous studies show that ginkgo improves memory;
current studies are looking at phosphatidylserine (a fat similar to that found
in nerve cells). We now seek to understand the effects of a curcuminoid
compound most commonly called turmeric. Turmeric is traditionally used as a
healing medicine in South Asia, and studies suggest that it may be effective in
treating Alzheimer’s disease. Experiments will assess the ability of turmeric
to ameliorate scopolamine-induced amnesia in our paradigm.

The Council on Undergraduate Research hosts a Registry of Undergraduate Researchers. The purpose of this registry is to facilitate matchmaking between undergraduates who have research experience and a desire to pursue an advanced degree, with graduate schools seeking high quality students who are well prepared for research. The Registry is open to students and graduate schools in the fields of Anthropology/Archaeology, Arts/Humanities, Biology/Biochemistry, Business, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Economics, Education, Engineering, English and Linguistics, Environmental Studies, Geosciences, Health Professions, History, Journalism and Communications, Mathematics/Computer Science, Physics/ Astronomy, Political Science, Psychology, Social Work and Sociology.

Any undergraduate may go to www.cur.org/ugreg/ to fill out a simple curriculum vitae form. There is no charge to the student and records will be made available to bona fide Graduate Schools that contract with CUR for this service. Organizations or companies seeking the students’ information for other marketing purposes will not be granted access. Graduate School representatives may contact students to invite applications or visits to the campus and laboratory, or to share information about their research programs and financial support opportunities.

Graduate schools may provide a link to their websites, and may provide a short description of opportunities, such as research fields and fellowships. It will also be possible for institutions to place an ad on the database website if the content is related to the mission of CUR and the Undergraduate Registry.

For graduate schools that wish to review the student information, there is an access fee of $1,500 for the entire database, or $300 for one specific discipline. Again, there is no cost to you as a student to create a profile.

We hope that students who are currently in their junior year will register now, but anyone with undergraduate research experience may register at any time. You will be able to update your listing as appropriate, to include any summer research experience or information about Senior Theses and test scores. We also welcome submissions by students who are engaged in Masters' Degree programs now but who plan on going on to a PhD program. Just fill out the information on the form including the date you intend to enter a PhD program and your date of completion of your undergraduate degree. Upload a link to your CV that contains complete information about your MS/MA degree activity (school, subject, thesis topic (if applicable), and advisor).

CUR believes that this service will be a great benefit for both students and graduate schools by narrowing the search for the right match. So if you are interested in graduate school, please take a moment to register now. Be sure to include a statement of your research interests, as this will be important for making the match.

Censoring Infectious Ideas: Queer Sexuality and the AIDS Crisis

Tuesday, November 9, 2010
Stern Center, Great Room – 7:00 p.m.

Beginning with her own experiences as an author whose work has been censored, Brier will discuss how the response to AIDS has been affected by attempts to remove discussions of sex and sexuality from its center and question the extent to which we have become a more sexually liberated culture since the 1980s.

This event is co-sponsored by the Departments of Sociology, American Studies and Women’s and Gender Studies.

Background Information (provided by speaker)
In the last stages of preparing her book for publication, including securing the permissions to publish several reproductions of early AIDS prevention posters from San Francisco, Brier’s press informed her that she would not be able to include any images that displayed full-frontal male nudity. Told that the images were not central to her argument and that they would be distracting, Brier had no choice but to exchange the images for less-explicit ones, a decision that uncannily mirrored what happened when the San Francisco AIDS Foundation first created and tried to distribute the posters using federal funds in the late 1980s. In “Censoring Infectious Ideas” Brier will discuss how the response to AIDS has been affected by attempts to remove discussions of sex and sexuality from its center and question the extent to which we have become a more sexually liberated culture since the 1980s.

Biography (provided by the speaker)
Jennifer Brier holds a joint appointment in the Program in Gender and Women’s Studies and the History Department at the University of Illinois at Chicago. She is the author of Infectious Ideas: U.S. Political Response to the AIDS Crisis, which was published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2009. In it she argues that AIDS provides the perfect lens through which to see the complex social and political history of the 1980s and 1990s. She details how activists, service providers, philanthropists and the federal government responded to AIDS in the first two decades of the AIDS epidemic and places the history of a successful yet complex and contentious social movement organized to deal with the AIDS epidemic in conversation with a more traditional political history of how the state dealt with this public health crisis. Brier is currently the co-curator of an exhibition on Chicago’s LGBT history set to open at the Chicago History Museum in May 2011.

Dear Students:

The Council on Undergraduate Research hosts a Registry of Undergraduate Researchers. The purpose of this registry is to facilitate matchmaking between undergraduates who have research experience and a desire to pursue an advanced degree, with graduate schools seeking high quality students who are well prepared for research. The Registry is open to students and graduate schools in the fields of Anthropology/Archaeology, Arts/Humanities, Biology/Biochemistry, Chemistry/Biochemistry, Economics, Engineering, Geosciences, Health Professions, Mathematics/Computer Science, Physics/ Astronomy, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology.

An institution-wide annual subscription fee for access to the entire database is $1,500 and departments can subscribe for $300 on their own for their discipline, if they choose. Again, there is no cost to you as a student to create a profile.

Graduate schools may provide a link to their websites, and may provide a short description of opportunities, such as research fields and fellowships. It will also be possible for institutions to place an ad on the database website if the content is related to the mission of CUR and the Undergraduate Registry.

Please feel free to contact me, should you have any questions.

Sincerely,

Robin Howard
Senior Director, Membership Services
Council on Undergraduate Research
734 15th St NW
Suite 550
(202) 783-4810x203
(202) 783-4811 fax
robin@cur.org

After working with the Office of Diversity Initiatives (ODI) and Professor Stephanie Gilmore (Women's Studies), Professor Megan Yost analyzed both quantitative and qualitative data from Dickinson's campus climate survey. The survey assessed the perceptions that students, faculty, and staff have of the adequacy and appropriateness of Dickinson's policies and people with respect to sexual orientation and gender identity. Professor Yost travelled to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, for the annual conference of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality, where she and Professor Gilmore presented the results of the survey at a panel entitled, "Youth Negotiating Sexuality." In the upcoming semester, they hope to conduct focus groups and interviews to further explore the campus climate for LGBT students, faculty, and staff. On campus, some recommendations that were made based on the results (such as a sexuality studies program, a safe-space program, and LGBT library collections) are already being planned across the campus with help from ODI, the Women's Center, and the Assault and Sexuality Coalition.

Dickinson's first Fat Talk Free Week, co-sponsored by the psychology department, featured speakers promoting a healthy body ideal as well as student activities which included trashing self-shaming body thoughts and pledging not to "Fat Talk" for a week. The program was modelled after the successful Reflections: Body Image program, a peer-led eating disorder prevention program developed in part by Delta Delta Delta. Dr. Carolyn Black Becker came to campus to present information about successful intervention measures for disordered eating behaviors.
