  <description><![CDATA[<p>Ben Edwards is slowly returning from the land of sabbatical and it turns out he's been pretty busy.  Lately he's been splitting his time between studying tuya volcanoes in British Columbia and studying an active eruption at Tolbachik in Kamchatka. Here, Ben's pointing out the passage zone of an old eruption in BC to alums Gwen Dunnington ('10) and Everett Lasher ('11) while they were on a summertime research trip.  Ben also has active research in Iceland and, this summer, will be taking 2 students with him to study the recent volcanic eruptions.</p>]]></description>

  <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The endowed Potter Lectureship has been established to honor Noel Potter
 Jr., Professor Emeritus of Geology at Dickinson. Once a year, preeminent
 geologists are brought to campus for a public and scientific lecture as
 part of the program.  This year, <strong>Katharine Huntington</strong> from the 
Department of Earth and Space Sciences at the University of Washington 
will deliver two talks.  </p>
<p>The first, intended for a more general audience, is entitled "Plateaus to Paleoclimate: 'Clumped' 
isotopes in Earth Science" and is scheduled for <strong>Thur. 21 Apr.  at 7:00 p.m. in Althouse 106</strong>.  Prof. 
Huntington's second talk will target a more technical audience and is entitled “Signals in 
sand: Detrital mineral thermochronology and the evolution of orogenic 
landscapes”.  The second talk is schedule for<strong> Fri. 22 Apr. at 12:00 p.m. in Kaufman 134</strong>.  The Department of Earth Sciences will lunch and drinks for the afternoon lecture.</p>]]></content:encoded>

<p>The Department of Geology has now changed names to the Department of Earth Sciences.  In an effort to more accurately reflect what we do and the direction we're heading, it was decided that along with curriculum changes, the department should adopt a name change as well.  Starting tomorrow, April 8, we will now be officially recognized as the Department of Earth Sciences!!!<br /></p>]]></content:encoded>
