How the Invisible Sciences of Environmental Surveillance make the World Safe for Infrastructure (and us)
Roger Turner, Visiting Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies “Industrialized societies take for granted functional technological systems like power grids, air travel, and water systems. Yet these systems are continually threatened by storms, floods, eruptions and other outbreaks of the natural world. This talk uses history and sociology to explore how unseen managers use environmental surveillance to make infrastructures reliable and safe. Although this scientific work is purposefully invisible, it is crucial to our daily lives--and profoundly threatened by government austerity measures and right-wing ideologies.” The complete schedule of Earth Issues Seminars is available at http://www.dickinson.edu/academics/programs/environmental-studies/content/Environmental-Studies-Earth-Issues-Seminars/

<details></details>Concerned residents and landowners living within the Marcellus shale gas play are asking how they can best determine if streams are being affected by drilling activities. For many, the goals are early detection and prevention of serious environmental impact. Community groups involved in volunteer monitoring and regional and state-wide service providers have responded to this need by collaboratively developing protocols and database management strategies to achieve these goals. In 2010, the Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring spent seven months researching and testing a volunteer-based Marcellus Monitoring protocol for the early detection of flowback contamination in small Pennsylvania streams. The presentation will cover the steps in and the science behind the protocol as well as stories from communities trained in gas land.

"Wild Utah: America's Redrock Wilderness" is a multi-media slideshow documenting citizen efforts to designate public lands in southern Utah's spectacular canyon country as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. This 20-minute journey through redrock splendor invigorates and motivates viewers to participate in the movement to protect these unique lands.

"Wild Utah: America's Redrock Wilderness" was made possible through the generous donation of photos, music and words from concerned Utahns who wish to pass this heritage onto future generations, including narration by Robert Redford.

In conjunction with a presentation on the current status of the Utah wilderness movement by Jackie Feinberg, National Grassroots Organizer for the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, this inspirational and informational event is a must see for people wishing to become personally involved to make the difference in this tremendous American public lands conservation effort.

We are delighted to announce that Michael Beevers will be
joining the department this coming summer as a professor with primary
responsibility for environmental policy.

Michael, whom many of you already met, hails from the
University of Maryland Department of Government and Politics. His Ph.D dissertation,
which he will defend next month, argues that externally imposed requirements on
natural resource management, such as with timber and minerals, may actually
work to impede sustainable development rather than promote peace and
reconciliation in war-torn Western Africa.

Hailing from upstate New York, Michael has an undergraduate
training in geology, followed by two masters degrees from the University of
Washington in natural resource management and international development.
Subsequently serving in the Peace Corps (alongside our own Jenn Halpin) in the
1990s, then as a county planner in Washington State, and even as a
mountaineering and climbing instructor, he brings a wealth of geographic
experience and technical expertise to our program. More recently he served as a
consultant to the UN and the World Resources Institute, contributed to the
research team of Professor Michael Oppenheimer at Princeton University working
on climate change and costal vulnerability, and currently serves as principal
advisor for undergraduates in the Environmental Science and Policy Program at
the University of Maryland.

Here at Dickinson, Michael will offer one
section of ENST 330 (Environmental Policy) in the fall, and then the
introductory environmental science course, ENST 130, in the spring. An amateur, but still accomplished, bluegrass
musician, we look forward to Michael's contribution not only in the classroom but
also at our social events.
