James Ciarrocca, GIS Specialist, Dickinson College will present: “Exploring the hidden landscapes of Pennsylvania using LiDAR data” LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is an optical remote sensing technology used for measuring distances that is quickly changing how scientists view and map the surface of the earth. Within the field of GIS (geographic information systems), LiDAR is gaining popularity for use in many applications such as terrain modeling, geomorphology, hydrology, landscape ecology, and urban planning, just to name a few. Starting in 2006, Pennsylvania undertook a program to collect and process high resolution LiDAR elevation data for the entire state, becoming one of the first states in the nation to do so. This talk will explore just some of the few ways that this technology is transforming our view and understanding of the Pennsylvania landscape. Thursday, April 11 Noon - 1:00 pmStafford Auditorium, Rector Science Complex

will present:
“More Than Just A Rotation: The Twisted Tale of Isomerizing Molecules”

The carbon-carbon bond is a fundamental motif in Organic Chemistry and often takes center stage in the architecture of new, interesting molecules and materials. Organic molecules can often be made functional by incorporating carbon-carbon bond rotations into their structural design, allowing for exciting opportunities in areas such as photochemistry and nanotechnology. This talk will discuss our investigation of two such devices that apply this rotary motion, known as isomerization, toward solving several important challenges in Chemistry: 1.) Measuring CH-pi interactions and 2.) Solution phase purification.

Seeing Good Blood: Why Cattle Portraiture Matters
During the eighteenth century, a new kind of animal appeared: “the purebred.” Purebred cattle, sheep and dogs differed from their forebears; they came in new shapes and colors, they were grown to enormous sizes, and they became the subject of a culture of bodily judgment at racetracks, at fairs, and in an enormous art market. Their highly regulated blood relationships became the source for new ideas about heredity and the capacity of bodies to change, which would prove crucial to thinkers like Charles Darwin. This talk will examine these connections, linking cattle portraiture to evolution, theories of beauty, and to the beginnings of the industrial food system.

Even worse, scientists in different fields use the same words in different ways, contributing to a confusion that limits the ability of policymakers to address chemical threats to health.

One way is by examining macaques, a genus of monkeys that has the greatest geographic range of all primates second to humans. Unlike most primates that live solely within the tropics, macaques inhabit diverse regions, including tropical rainforests, mountainous habitats, and northern climates with marked seasonal fluctuations in temperature and snowfall. This presentation discusses the evolution of body size and proportions in macaques as responses to this environmental diversity as well as the influences of variations in locomotion, phylogeny, and other ecological factors.

It is comforting to believe this greeting card sentiment; it is the American Dream. Human flight and the four-minute mile were proclaimed to be impossible, but both came to pass. Yet there are impossible things, and it is possible to prove that they are so. In this talk we will look at some of the most famous impossibility theorems—the so-called "problems of antiquity." The ancient Greek geometers tried and failed to square circles, trisect angles, double cubes, and construct regular polygons using only a compass and straightedge. So did future generations of great mathematicians. It took two thousand years to prove conclusively that all four of these are mathematically impossible. No, not even Chuck Norris can square the circle.
